Description: Honeydont hangover AKA Tito is a 9-year-old standardbred gelding. Tito raced in his early years and did pretty well. Tito came to us from the kill pen with skin conditions, shoe boils, and terribly thin. He was very sad, but as he came to trust people again, more of his personality is showing through! He loves treats and enjoys playing with his rubber chicken and almost anything within reach. Tito will let us know what he wishes his future to be.
Many horses that have been retired from racing due to age, inability, or lameness are sent to auction or bought directly from members of isolated communities where they are used for transportation or farm work. In many ways, this life can be more difficult and demanding than racing, and after a while these horses are again sent to auction and often picked up by kill buyers. These horses appear to have given up, there is no sparkle in their eyes, and their bodies show the wear and tear of hard work. Some of these horses are lucky enough to be bailed out of the kill pens and given another chance. Slaughter is a cruel way for a horses life to end. Almost $2000 has to be raised to save a horse because of bail, transportation, immediate health care and foster care before they even reach an adoption organization to be given a second chance.
One of the most amazing things about being a Sunshine Volunteer is to be a part of bringing them back to life physically and mentally and watch them be reborn. Most are rehabilitated and retrained as riding horses and adopted to loving and forever homes.
