On September 17 we will be taking our info booth out to SUNY Morrisville’s equine institute to help spread the word about Sunshine Horses and what we provide for retired harness racehorses. The event-the Morrisville Standardbred Yearling Sale. Every year hundreds of yearling colts and fillies are auctioned to new racing careers where they will be trained and raced. The best will go on to breeding farms, where their progeny will be the next future star. However, there is always this question-what do you do with the ones who don’t do well, the ones who are too slow, don’t take to racing, get hurt too badly to continue, age out, or even the champion geldings and mares who don’t have a future in the breeding shed?
This is where Sunshine Horses comes in. We offer drivers, owners and trainers a place for their retired racehorses to go, where they can receive rehabilitation from old injuries, retraining for pleasure riding and driving, and eventually find new homes and second careers. We are just one of several aftercare facilities available to harness racers.
