Sponsorship Spotlight- Jan Lower

September 29, 2018

Have you considered sponsoring a horse?  Sponsors contribute to the daily costs to care for our horses while they wait to find their forever homes (or live out their lives in sanctuary).  This allows us to set up an emergency fund while covering the costs of the maintenance and operation of our farm.  Without the support of sponsors, it would be difficult for us to maintain a herd of 30+ horses.

We could not operate without the support of our amazing volunteers.  Longtime Sunshine volunteer and volunteer coordinator Jan Lower is one of our many volunteers who sponsor a horse.  Jan likes to sponsor horses that many need a little extra time finding their forever homes.

Jan previously sponsored Walden.  Walden was a big boy with a lot of energy but due to past injuries from his racing days he was unable to be ridden.  Walden was bonded with Battleshipp, another Sunshine horse who could not be ridden.  Jan knew that it would be difficult to find a family that would take 2 companion horses.  Jan visited with Walden during weekly volunteer shifts at the barn.  She saw him through injuries and illness but also through improved health and temperament.  Walden was placed in his forever home with Battleshipp in 2017.  Jan knew that she contributed to the health and care of Walden while he was waiting for his forever home.

After Walden was adopted, Jan started sponsoring Mount Majesty (Monty).  Monty is a stunning retired Thoroughbred racehorse whose impressive stature can be intimidating when people first meet him.  When Jan first started working with Monty he gave her attitude.  Jan and Monty's trainers recognized this "attitude" as a defense for anything outside of his comfort zone.

After many hours on a gentle lead, working through desensitization exercises, Monty's confidence grew and his demeanor softened.  Volunteers who have not seen Monty since he first came to Sunshine would not believe it is the same horse when they see a now confident Monty walking over the scary plastic tarp, crossing the noisy bridge and following without a lead around the entire indoor arena.  Little visits with Monty by his stall give Jan's barn visits more purpose.

Monty, like many of our horses, is co-sponsored by more than one person.  Jan enjoys discussing Monty's well-being and training with his co-sponsor Jim.  Co-sponsoring allows Sunshine supporters to contribute at whatever level they are comfortable with.

Every dollar helps us get closer to our goal of 100% sponsorship of our entire herd.  There are currently 15 Sunshine horses looking for full or partial sponsorship (some featured below).  Please visit our website for more information on sponsorship.  Thank you for your continuing support of our herd.  We could not do what we do without you.
