When you adopt a rescue horse, you are giving that horse a second chance. You are also freeing up a stall that we can use to rescue another horse in need. We wish we could take in every horse that is looking for a home but, like all rescues, we are limited but our available space and resources.
While we have successfully placed over 200 horses in their forever homes over the past 15 years, many of our senior horses have been with us for a while and are still looking for their forever homes. If you are looking to add a horse to your barn, consider adopting a senior horse and giving them a loving home for their final years.
Many horses live well into their thirties with good health and proper care. Our senior horses available for adoption:
Arabians are known to have a long life span. Mystery, a 24 year old Arabian and Leggs, a 27 year old Arabian cross are looking to be adopted together (both geldings). These boys are extremely affectionate with each other and their human companions. These boys are fully sponsored.
Al, a 22 year old red roan Standardbred gelding is a retired New York City Carriage Horse. This big boy forms bonds quickly with other horses. His laid back personality would make him a great addition to any barn. Al is looking for a sponsor. He is available as companion only.
Scarlett is a 25 year old Swedish Warmblood mare. When we rescued Scarlett she was pregnant with our first and only foal Sonny. Sonny has been adopted but his mama is still looking for her forever home. Scarlett loves mothering the mares in her turnout group. She is happiest when she is surrounded by other horses. This sweet girl is currently partially sponsored. She is available as companion only.
Carole's Cookie Jar aka Cookie is a 25 year old Standardbred mare. She won $93,859 during a successful racing career. Cookie lived in a home with a Standardbred gelding as her primary companion for several years. Since her arrival at Sunshine, she has been turned out with a group of mares without incident. Cookie loves her treats and whinnies when she knows food is coming. Cookie is looking for a sponsor.
Defying the Odds aka May is a 21 year old Standardbred mare. May would do best with an experienced rider who will give her regular exercise and attention. May has experience with barrel racing and is always ready for new challenges. She enjoys running with her turnout group of mares. May is currently partially sponsored.
